Renault has officially confirmed that it will launch the strong-hybrid version of the Duster in India on October 17, when prices for the new variant will be announced. This will mark the third powertrain option for the compact SUV, joining the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines.
The launch invite carries a pointed message: “Dear diesel, thank you for the ride. We will take it from here” — signalling that the hybrid is stepping in to fill the gap left by the discontinued diesel engine.
Powertrain details –
The Duster hybrid uses Renault’s ‘E-Tech’ hybrid technology, which the company says draws on its Formula 1 experience. At its core is a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre (1,789cc), four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors — a 20hp unit that acts as a generator and a 49hp motor that drives the wheels. Combined output is rated at around 160-162hp and 172Nm, supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack, notably larger than the 0.60kWh unit used in Toyota’s rival hybrid system.
Unlike the Toyota-derived hybrid setup found in the Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Hyryder — which uses an e-CVT and power-split device for a step-free driving feel — Renault’s system sends power through a multi-mode automatic gearbox with fixed gear ratios. This means drivers can expect engine rpm to rise and fall more like a conventional automatic, with noticeable gear shifts as the car switches between electric, engine, and combined drive modes. The Duster hybrid will be offered exclusively with an automatic transmission.
Efficiency and market positioning –
As with any full hybrid, efficiency gains will come from low-speed electric running, regenerative braking, and the ability to shut off the petrol engine when it isn’t needed. Renault claims the system will allow up to 80 percent of city driving to be done in EV mode, though real-world mileage will still depend on traffic, driving style, ambient temperature and terrain.
With this launch, the Duster hybrid becomes the fourth hybrid offering in the midsize SUV segment, going up against the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Maruti Victoris. Expected to be priced in the range of Rs 19-23 lakh (ex-showroom), the hybrid is also expected to deliver the best fuel economy across the Duster lineup, helping offset the loss of a diesel option.
Interestingly, Renault claims its initial stock of the Duster hybrid has already sold out ahead of the official price announcement. Bookings have been temporarily paused, though the company may open a fresh booking window depending on customer response.
