– First plug-in hybrid Maybach for India; V8 and V12 options are not offered.
– Gets a 3.0-litre inline-six with an electric motor, making 577bhp and 750Nm.
– Comes as a CBU import in a four-seat “first-class” layout.
Mercedes-Benz India has launched the facelifted Maybach S-Class at Rs 3.35 crore (ex-showroom). Badged S 580 e, it is the first plug-in hybrid Maybach sold in India, replacing the V8 (S 580) and V12 (S 680) cars of the pre-facelift range. The update brings a new electronics architecture, a redesigned front end with more illumination, and a rear cabin that is aimed squarely at the owner rather than the driver. Here is all you need to know about it.

Price & Variants –
| Model | Powertrain | Price (ex-showroom) |
|---|---|---|
| Maybach S 580 e | 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid, AWD | Rs 3.35 crore |
Price as announced at launch; on-road cost will vary by state and personalisation.
- The Maybach arrives as a CBU (completely built unit) import, and the first batch is fully loaded.
- Mercedes is pushing personalisation, so cars will be offered in curated collections with different paint and trim combinations.
- Every car gets the four-seat layout; there is no three-seat rear bench option.
- A locally assembled version is expected to follow in due course, though Mercedes has not confirmed timing.
Design –

- Front: The Maybach gets the new S-Class face with the three-pointed star motif in its Digital Light headlamps, which also carry rose-gold Maybach logos. The cascading grille is illuminated, and the extra chrome on the bumper is now studded with Maybach logos.
- Side: Dual-tone paint, with a fine pinstripe below the upper colour, is the highlight. The huge rear doors remain the easiest way to spot a Maybach on the road. It rides on new 20-inch forged wheels whose centre logo stays upright while the wheel turns.
- Rear: The tail-lamps repeat the three-pointed star motif, and the boot lid carries the S 580 e badge. The charging flap (for DC fast charging) sits on one side, while the fuel flap, marked “hybrid”, sits on the other.
- Cameras: The car has 10 cameras in total, which feed the driver assistance systems and the surround view.
- Illumination: The grille and the Maybach wordmark are lit. Some details, such as the star and the C-pillar logo, differ between markets because the CBU cars follow EU homologation, so check the exact car at the dealership.
Colour Options –
Mercedes has not published a full colour list for India. Dual-tone is the focus of the launch batch, and the available collections are expected to be built around two-tone combinations.
Interior –

- The rear seats are the main event. The Maybach is 180mm longer in wheelbase than the long-wheelbase S-Class, and the seats recline and extend into a near-flat position.
- The four-seat layout has a fixed centre console with heated and ventilated cup holders, aluminium champagne flutes, fold-out tray tables and a wireless charger placed outside the console. Unlike earlier cars, there is no refrigerator; a pass-through to the boot takes its place.
- Crystal Nappa white leather, piano-lacquer trim, leather-wrapped cushions and designer seat buckles are part of the package. The seat belts hide airbags, part of a 15-airbag kit.
- Each rear passenger gets a smartphone-like MBUX remote to control the entertainment screens, lights, blinds and sunroof. Wireless headphones are provided for each seat.
- Up front, the driver sits behind the MBUX Hyperscreen. The steering wheel brings back physical controls, including a rotary volume knob, replacing the touch-sensitive pads that were not always reliable.
Features & Safety –
Key features –

- MBUX Hyperscreen with three displays (12.3-inch, 12.8-inch and 12.3-inch for the passenger)
- Twin 11.6-inch rear entertainment screens, with MBUX entertainment included as a three-year digital extra
- Burmester 4D sound system with around 30 speakers, 1,610W of output and eight exciters
- Rear-wheel steering with up to 10 degrees of angle to manage the car’s length of around 5.5 metres
- Air suspension as standard, with a foam insert in the wheels to reduce tyre noise
- AI assistant that responds to voice commands, with over-the-air update support
- Collapsible spare wheel in the boot
Safety –

- 15 airbags, including belt bags
- Level 2.5 driver assistance hardware with a full set of ADAS functions
- The hardware is also ready for more advanced self-driving, but those functions will not be usable in India under current rules
Powertrain Options –
The S 580 e uses the same basic plug-in hybrid layout as the S 450 e, in a more powerful state of tune.
| Specification | Maybach S 580 e |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-petrol + electric motor |
| Power | 577bhp (585PS), combined |
| Torque | 750Nm, combined |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drivetrain | AWD |
| 0-100kmph | 5.1 seconds (claimed) |
| Top speed | 250kmph (limited) |
| EV range | 98km (claimed, WLTP) |
| Claimed efficiency | 34.5kmpl (WLTP) |
| Charging | DC up to 60kW, AC up to 11kW |
- The combined output is 79bhp and 50Nm higher than the old V8, which means the new car is stronger on paper even with two fewer cylinders.
- The car weighs around 2.5 tonnes.
- The EV-only top speed is claimed at 140kmph, and the battery can be charged at a public DC fast charger as well as at home. Mercedes includes an AC wallbox charger with the car.
- The 34.5kmpl figure is a claim based on the WLTP cycle and would be hard to match in real-world use, especially once the battery is depleted.
Rivals –
The Maybach S 580 e has few direct competitors in India. The nearest alternatives are the Rolls-Royce Ghost and the Bentley Flying Spur, both of which sit at higher price points, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class itself for buyers who want to sit up front.

Our Take –
The Maybach S 580 e swaps cylinders for efficiency, and the numbers make a reasonable case for it: more power and torque than the V8 it replaces, a quieter drive and roughly 100km of electric running for daily use. The rear cabin remains the reason to buy it, with first-class seating, a better sound system and individual controls for each passenger. The caveats are the loss of the V8 and V12 character that Maybach buyers once valued, the missing fridge, and the CBU-only supply for now. For a buyer who is driven rather than driving, a Rs 3.35 crore price looks in line with the car’s positioning.
