October 2026: India’s Car Market Set A Record Above 5 Lakh And Also Fell 14 Per Cent. Both Are True!

  • Dealer dispatches crossed 5 lakh units in a month for the first time
  • Retail registrations fell about 14 per cent year on year
  • Festive timing and a very high base explain most of the gap

October 2026 produced two headlines that look like they cannot both be right. Factory dispatches to dealers are estimated at 5.25-5.30 lakh units, the first time the industry has crossed 5 lakh in a month. Yet retail registrations came in at roughly 5 lakh, down 14.2 to 14.6 per cent from last October. So is the market booming or shrinking?

Wholesale and retail are measuring different things

Wholesales count cars sent from the factory to dealers. Vahan registrations and FADA data count cars that customers actually registered. Carmakers filled showrooms ahead of the festive season, while a large part of the buying has not happened yet.

Wholesale figures are company-reported dispatches. Retail figures are Vahan data compiled by AutoPunditz as of November 2. The gap is wholesales minus retail.

Maruti is the outlier, with dispatches and registrations almost identical. The company says its network stock is only 12 days and its pending order book is 2.45 lakh units, so its cars are leaving showrooms almost as fast as they arrive. Across the other five brands in the table, about 18,200 more cars were dispatched than registered. Mahindra accounts for close to half of that.

Mahindra: record dispatches, falling registrations

Mahindra’s October is the clearest example of the split. It reported its highest-ever domestic wholesales at 73,338 units, up 2.4 per cent. On Vahan it registered 65,055 units, down 13.5 per cent year on year. That gap of over 8,000 units probably reflects stock on its way to showrooms, but the data does not show it directly.

The Tata-Mahindra race changes with the measure too. On wholesales, Tata leads by just 556 units. On registrations, the lead is 7,252.

Why October’s retail number looks weak

Two things explain it:

  • A very high base. October 2025 was the first full month after the GST revision, with demand surging. The retail fall is measured against that.
  • Diwali timing. Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November this year, so many buyers are waiting. Registrations still rose 15.1 per cent over September.

So the retail fall looks more like a tough comparison than a collapse in demand.

The real story is what people are buying

Under the headline numbers, the fuel mix is shifting fast, according to FADA:

  • EVs took 7.30 per cent of registrations, up from 3.55 per cent a year ago.
  • Hybrids reached 9.94 per cent, up from 6.96 per cent.
  • Together, that is 17.24 per cent of the market, more than one in six cars.
  • Petrol and ethanol fell to 41.60 per cent from 48.96 per cent.
  • CNG and LPG rose to 24.59 per cent.

Electric cars sold between about 36,000 and 36,900 units, up around 76 per cent, and it was the fifth straight month above 30,000. From January to October, 2,93,877 electric cars were sold, against 1,90,915 in all of 2025. At the current pace, 2026 could end near 3.75 lakh units.

The EV winners are also changing. Tata still leads with a 40 per cent share, but Mahindra posted its best month at 8,541 units. MG’s share fell to 16 per cent from 26 per cent, and VinFast went from 142 units to over 2,500.

CNG is the other quiet winner. Maruti sold about 87,000 CNG cars, nearly 40 per cent of its volume, and says CNG capacity is its constraint, not demand.

The catch

A wholesale record is not a sales record. It only becomes one if the stock in showrooms turns into registrations. The sources also disagree on small numbers: one report puts October 2025 wholesales at 4.68 lakh, another at 4.61 lakh, and EV totals vary by source. Use one source consistently when comparing.

If November’s Diwali buying clears the stock Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia have built up, October will look like the start of a record festive quarter. If it does not, the 5 lakh milestone may look like a stocking exercise. November’s registration numbers will settle it.
