Renault India has revealed the ARAI-certified mileage of the new Duster hybrid and opened bookings for it, eight days before its launch on October 17. Customers can reserve the SUV for Rs 21,000 on Renault’s website or at authorised dealerships. The hybrid is the first model in India to use Renault’s E-Tech strong-hybrid technology, under the company’s futuREady roadmap.

Powertrain –

The Duster hybrid, called E-Tech 160, pairs a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery. One motor is a 20bhp generator and the other, a 49bhp unit, drives the wheels. Combined output is 160bhp and 172Nm. Power goes to the wheels through a multi-mode automatic gearbox, which Renault says can run on electric power alone, on the engine alone, or on both together.

This is a strong hybrid, so there is no plug-in charging. The battery is topped up by regenerative braking and by the engine while driving. Renault claims the SUV can cover up to 80 per cent of city driving in electric mode. Real-world economy will depend on traffic, speed, temperature and driving style, so the 29kmpl figure is a claim and not what owners should expect on every drive.

What else is on offer –

The hybrid joins the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol versions of the new-generation Duster, which come with six-speed manual and six-speed DCT gearboxes. Renault has not yet announced the hybrid’s variants, equipment list or price. It is expected to share the petrol Duster’s kit, which includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, Level 2 ADAS, six airbags and a 360-degree camera. The standard Duster has a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, but that rating has not been confirmed for the hybrid.

Price, delivery and rivals –

Pricing will be announced at launch. Industry reports expect it to fall between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 22 lakh (ex-showroom). Delivery timelines are yet to be confirmed, though early deliveries are expected soon after launch. One report also says the hybrid is already sold out for this calendar year, but Renault has not given details of allocation.

The Duster hybrid will compete directly with the Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Victoris and Toyota Hyryder, all of which offer strong-hybrid options. Renault says its 29kmpl claim is higher than theirs. Its pricing will decide whether that advantage matters to buyers, since the Duster has so far had no diesel or hybrid option.

Our Take –

The hybrid fills the biggest gap in the Duster’s line-up, and a 29kmpl claim gives efficiency-focused buyers a strong reason to consider it. The caveats are that pricing, features and delivery dates are still unknown. Wait for the October 17 launch before you commit to a booking.
