Tata closes its best-ever quarter with EVs and CNG making up 51% of volumes, Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUVs pass 1 lakh billings, and Hyundai logs its highest monthly total yet.

  • Mahindra domestic SUV sales up 14% YoY at 64,092 units
  • Hyundai total sales of 77,916 units, its best month ever

India’s three biggest homegrown and Korean-origin carmakers entered the festive season with strong September numbers. Tata reported record quarterly volumes, Mahindra’s SUV sales kept growing, and Hyundai set a new monthly high including exports.

Tata Motors: Best Quarter Ever –

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 68,810 units in the domestic market in September 2026. That is 15.32% more than the 59,667 units of September 2025, and 5.45% (3,557 units) more than August’s 65,253. Adding 1,400 exports (up 12.90%), total sales were 70,210 units, up 15.27% YoY.

EVs drove the growth. Tata sold 15,384 EVs in the month, up 67.38% from 9,191 a year earlier. EVs made up about 21.91% of total volumes, against 15.09% last September, and accounted for roughly two-thirds of the year-on-year increase.

The quarter (July–September, Q2 FY27) was Tata’s highest ever:

MetricQ2 FY27Q2 FY26Growth
Total sales2,01,7231,44,39739.70%
Domestic1,96,6741,40,18940.29%
Exports5,0494,20819.99%
EVs47,15024,85589.70%

EVs made up about 23% of Tata’s quarterly volumes, which MD and CEO Shailesh Chandra compared with roughly 8% for the industry. CNG models also had their best quarter and contributed 28%. Together, EVs and CNG accounted for 51% of sales. Tata also says the Punch was India’s highest-selling SUV during the quarter.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported total auto sales of 1,14,874 units in September, up 15% YoY including exports. Domestic SUV sales were 64,092 units, up 13.98% from 56,233 a year ago and 8.16% above August’s 59,257.

  • Quarter: passenger vehicle sales for July–September were 1,83,397 units, up 26.04% from 1,45,503.
  • Half-year: April–September domestic SUV sales reached 3,58,142 units, up about 20%.
  • EV milestone: Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, said Mahindra has crossed 1 lakh cumulative billings of its Electric Origin SUVs.

Other segments –

  • Light commercial vehicles: 30,420 units, up about 14%.
  • Three-wheelers (including electric): 16,343 units, up 26%.
  • Auto exports: 4,019 units, down 7%, although April–September exports are up 48% at 30,031 units.
  • Trucks and buses: 2,912 units, up 53%.
  • Tractors: domestic sales fell 23% to 50,208 units. Mahindra blames the festive season shifting into October and a high base from last year’s GST rate cut. April–September tractor volumes are still up 7%.

Hyundai: Highest-Ever Month

Hyundai Motor India sold 77,916 units in September, up 10.8% YoY. This beats its previous monthly record, set only a couple of months ago.

September 2026UnitsYoY
Domestic57,16610.9%
Exports20,75010.4%
Total77,91610.8%

The domestic market made up about 73% of the total, helped by the Creta and Venue, and exports contributed close to 27%. More than one in four Hyundai vehicles counted in September was shipped overseas.

Bayon is next. Bookings are open for the Bayon, which will sit between the Venue and the Creta. Its global debut is due at the Paris Motor Show this month, in European specification, and an India launch is expected in the coming weeks. Hyundai has confirmed a petrol engine with 6-speed manual and IVT automatic options, a dual-screen cabin and a built-in generative-AI voice assistant.

September at a Glance –

BrandSeptember 2026YoY
Tata (domestic PV)68,81015.32%
Mahindra (domestic SUV)64,09213.98%
Hyundai (domestic)57,16610.9%

These numbers are not like-for-like: Tata reports all passenger vehicles including EVs, Mahindra reports SUVs, and Hyundai’s total including exports is 77,916.

Our Take –

Tata’s story is the powertrain mix. When EVs and CNG together form more than half of quarterly sales, the company is less exposed to petrol-only demand. Mahindra’s SUV growth is steady, though a weak tractor month shows how much the festive calendar can move numbers. Hyundai’s export share keeps its record intact even as the domestic market grows at a slower pace. With the Bayon due soon, October will be the real test of how much the festive demand adds.
