Why Mahindra Cars are so Tuned From Factory

When you browse through the brochures of most mass-market car brands in India, a familiar pattern emerges: one engine, one set of power and torque figures, regardless of the car it’s bolted into. Mahindra, however, has been quietly rewriting this rulebook. No other mainstream manufacturer in India tunes its engines as aggressively and as frequently as Mahindra does — and the results speak for themselves.

Same Engine, Different Beasts

Take the 2.0-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine, for instance. It powers both the Mahindra Thar and the XUV 7XO. In the Thar, it produces 160 PS, while the same block in the XUV 7XO belts out a full 200 PS. That’s a 40 PS difference from identical displacement and architecture.

The story is even more dramatic on the diesel side. The familiar 2.2-litre turbo-diesel mill does duty across the Thar, Scorpio N, and XUV 7XO. But here’s how the outputs vary:

  • Thar (lower variants): 175 PS
  • Scorpio N: 130 PS
  • XUV 7XO: 185 PS

That’s a spread of 55 PS — all from the same engine family. Even the smaller 1.5-litre diesel gets similar treatment, with output figures tailored to the vehicle it serves.

What Mahindra does is not just a software tweak or a one-size-fits-all boost map. It deliberately tunes each application to match the character, weight, and customer expectations of the car. A rugged off-roader needs a different torque curve than a highway-cruising SUV, and Mahindra understands this better than anyone else in the Indian market.

Why Don’t Others Do It?

The simple answer is: most don’t want to, or they can’t due to limitations. Naturally aspirated petrol engines offer very little flexibility — extracting meaningful power gains isn’t just an ECU remap; it demands physical component changes like cams, intake, and exhaust. Turbocharged petrols and all modern turbo-diesels, however, do allow this kind of electronic and mechanical tuning. Yet, the rest of the industry largely stays on the safe, homogenized path.

Look at the Hyundai-Kia group. Their 1.5-litre diesel engine is a stellar unit, but it delivers exactly the same output across four completely different cars: the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Hyundai Creta, and Hyundai Alcazar. In every one of them, you get 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. In a compact SUV like the Sonet, that figure feels punchy and torquey — the car feels eager and lively. But place that same state of tune in a much bigger, heavier three-row Alcazar, and the engine merely feels adequate. It’s not underpowered in a deal-breaking way, but it lacks the excitement and effortless surge that Mahindra’s specially calibrated engines bring to their respective vehicles. The “want” factor simply doesn’t kick in the way it does in a Mahindra.

This uniform approach isn’t exclusive to Hyundai. Almost all mass-market brands follow the same playbook, with one notable exception: Tata Motors. Tata, too, tunes its turbo-petrol and diesel engines differently for different models. But even Tata doesn’t do it with the sheer aggression and frequency that Mahindra displays. The Mahindra philosophy seems to be: if the hardware is capable, why not exploit it to the fullest for each application?

Why This Needs to Change

The market is crying out for this kind of differentiation. Simply tweaking gear ratios isn’t enough to compensate for an engine that feels out of its depth in a heavier vehicle. A small-displacement engine in its base stock form often fails to deliver the driving satisfaction that a properly tuned version — or a larger engine — can. Mahindra’s strategy offers a blueprint: use the inherent flexibility of turbocharged engines to give every car a distinct personality, rather than letting a good engine feel bland just because it’s been transplanted from a smaller sibling.

When an XUV 7XO rushes forward with 200 PS while sharing the same engine code as a Thar, it’s not just a number on paper. It’s a statement. And it’s one that the rest of the Indian car industry would do well to learn from.
