The Fortuner
Beast on the Road

Thousands of kilometres, one honest verdict. City traffic, mountain roads, heavy rain — everything this SUV had to prove, it proved.

I still remember the day I first saw the Toyota Fortuner on the road. It was massive. It was bold. It demanded attention. I knew right then I had to own one.

The road presence of this SUV is simply unmatched. When you drive it, people look at you differently. You feel like a king on the road.

My experience with the Fortuner has been nothing short of extraordinary. Every single day with this vehicle teaches me something new. And today, I want to share my honest thoughts with you.

This is not just another car review. This is my personal journey with one of India’s most loved SUVs.

Why I Chose It Over Everything Else

Let me be brutally honest with you. The Fortuner is not cheap. That’s serious money by any measure.

Starting price₹34.76L
Top variant₹50.46L

Many people told me to look at other options. They said it was overpriced, that the interior was outdated, that I was making a mistake.

But I had my reasons. After driving this beast for thousands of kilometres, I can tell you I made the right choice — it gives confidence, reliability, and pure driving pleasure that no rival matches.

The Engine That Makes My Heart Race

The engine options are what truly sets this SUV apart.

201bhp
2.8L Turbo-Diesel
500Nm
Peak Torque
164bhp
2.7L Petrol
10.3–14.6kmpl
ARAI Mileage

2.8-Litre Turbo-Diesel

An absolute monster. I remember my first highway drive — I pressed the accelerator and the SUV just surged forward. No hesitation, no lag, just pure brute force.

Mild Hybrid Assist

Adds electric assist to the already powerful engine, making the drive even smoother and more responsive.

2.7-Litre Petrol

No slouch either — smooth and refined, perfect for city driving. But honestly, the diesel is where the magic happens. The torque delivery is addictive.

Driving Experience That Blew My Mind

The high driving position is a game changer. You sit above everyone else, see traffic from far away, and feel in complete control.

On highways, this SUV is a cruiser — it eats up miles without breaking a sweat. Off-road, it handles mud, rocks and steep inclines like a champ.

The automatic transmission is smooth and responsive, making city driving surprisingly easy despite the massive size.

Where It Falls Short

The body roll is noticeable in sharp corners, and the steering response is a bit slow. It’s not a sports car, and it doesn’t pretend to be.

Comfort That Surprised Everyone

The cabin is spacious — seven seats, generous legroom, and even the third row is usable for adults on short trips.

Ventilated front seats are a blessing in Indian summers, and despite being a body-on-frame SUV, the Fortuner absorbs bumps reasonably well. Driving from Mumbai to Pune in heavy rain, it felt planted and secure the whole way.

Technology That Keeps Me Connected

  • 8-inch touchscreen with flawless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Connected car app — check vehicle status from your phone
  • JBL 11-speaker sound system for an immersive listen
  • Wireless charger — no more messy cables
  • 360-degree camera, a lifesaver in tight parking spots

Cabin tech — touchscreen, JBL audio, and connected car controls.

Safety That Gives Me Peace of Mind

  • 5-star NCAP crash rating with seven airbags
  • ABS with EBD for controlled emergency braking
  • Vehicle Stability Control and traction control in wet conditions
  • Rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder, speed alert

My advice? Don’t compromise on safety. The Fortuner gives you peace of mind that money can’t buy.

Maintenance and Real-World Running

Toyota’s reliability is legendary, and the Fortuner lives up to it. Service costs are reasonable, the service network is extensive across India, and my own maintenance costs have been surprisingly low.

Real-world mileage runs around 12 kmpl in the city and 14 on the highway — you don’t buy a 500 Nm torque SUV to save fuel, you buy it for the experience.

Variants and Colours

Eleven variants in total — petrol, diesel and hybrid, in 2WD or 4WD, manual or automatic. I went with the 4WD diesel automatic, the perfect balance of power and capability.

Sparkling Black Crystal Shine is my personal favourite, though white remains the most common choice on Indian roads.

How It Compares

I cross-shopped it against the Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster, Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota Majestor and Mahindra Scorpio N. Each has its strengths, but the Fortuner’s ruggedness, reliability and resale value won me over.

Tips for Potential Buyers

Test drive every variant

Don’t just read reviews — feel the power yourself.

Match it to your usage

City and highway driving call for different priorities; off-road capability may be overkill for some.

Budget for upkeep

Reliable, but not the cheapest SUV to run — plan for it.

Negotiate on offers

Dealers often have discounts and promotions worth pushing for.

Think resale

The Fortuner holds its value extremely well — it’s a smart long-term buy.

Go 4WD if you can

The capability transforms the driving experience.

Pros and Cons — My Honest Take

Pros

  • Excellent long-distance highway cruiser
  • Spacious, comfortable seven-seat cabin
  • Genuinely capable off-road hardware
  • Robust, reliable build quality
  • Strong resale value

Cons

  • Unsettled ride on uneven roads
  • Noticeable body roll in corners
  • Nose-dive under hard braking
  • Interior feels dated next to newer rivals
  • Not the most fuel-efficient choice

Final Verdict

The Fortuner gets my wholehearted recommendation. Not perfect — exceptional where it matters.
