Highlights –

  • Honda’s next-generation hybrid system gets the official name “Honda Hybrid”
  • Global rollout of models with the system begins in 2027
  • 15 hybrid models planned by March 2030, mostly for North America

Honda has officially named its next-generation hybrid technology “Honda Hybrid”. The Japanese carmaker made the announcement in Tokyo on October 9, 2026, and said the first models with the system will arrive globally in 2027. The name will also be used worldwide as the customer-facing brand for the technology.

Honda Hybrid is built on the company’s two-motor e:HEV system, with an updated engine, a revised drive unit and new control technology. The company says it is widening the engine’s high-efficiency operating range and making the drive unit smaller and more efficient, all aimed at better fuel economy. Honda has not shared any power, torque or mileage figures yet.

The carmaker plans to launch 15 models with the system by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030. Most of them are meant for North America. Honda says it has been shifting development and production resources towards hybrids as part of the roadmap to rebuild its car business, which it announced in May 2026.

New platform and all-wheel drive –

  • The hybrids will sit on a newly developed platform that Honda claims balances rigidity with lower weight.
  • Honda says the body is managed so that it feels as if it flexes slightly through corners, which should improve roadholding.
  • The cars will get a Motion Management System, which is Honda’s in-house integrated control technology.
  • A newly developed electric all-wheel-drive system (e-AWD) will also be offered. Honda has not revealed how it works.

Where it comes from –

Honda traces its hybrid lineage to the IMA system in the first-generation Insight in 1999. It then moved to the one-motor i-DCD, the two-motor i-MMD and the three-motor SH-AWD in 2012. i-MMD was rebranded as e:HEV in 2020, and Honda Hybrid is the next step from there.

What is expected, not confirmed –

Honda has not named the models. Reports from the US suggest the Civic, Accord and CR-V are likely to get the system, along with a hybrid version of the Acura RDX. Larger vehicles such as the Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline and Acura MDX could get a V6 hybrid with a third motor on the rear axle. One US outlet that drove a next-generation Civic Hybrid prototype in 2025 reported a new 2.0-litre engine, two electric motors and a new battery. Treat all of this as expectation until Honda confirms it.

What it means for India –

Honda has not said anything about India. The company’s current hybrid offering here is the City e:HEV, and it is not yet known if or when Honda Hybrid will reach Indian showrooms.

Our Take –

Honda is building on an e:HEV system that already has a good reputation, and the new platform and e-AWD point to a more engaging drive. The name is plain, though, and the announcement has no efficiency numbers, model list or launch timeline beyond 2027. The first model to carry the badge will be the real test. Indian buyers should also watch for any word on a local launch.
