The month of Sawan is a time of great sacred and religious significance in the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered a symbol of devotion, fasting, worship and greenery. In the year 2025, the month of Sawan is starting on 10 July 2025, Thursday and will end on 8 August 2025, Friday.

Religious significance of Sawan –

Worship of Lord Shiva –
The month of Sawan is especially important for Shiva devotees. Devotees offer water, Bel leaves, milk and Ganga water on the Shivling throughout this month.
Monday fast –
A special fast is observed on every Monday of Sawan which is called ‘Sawan Somvar Vrat’. This fast is considered auspicious for married women to get good fortune and for unmarried girls to get a good groom.
Kanwar Yatra –
In Sawan, Kanwariyas bring Ganga water and offer it in Shiva temples. This journey is a very sacred form of Shiva devotion.
Natural beauty of Sawan –
The month of Sawan is very beautiful not only from religious point of view but also from natural point of view. This is the time when the rainy season is at its peak, the earth becomes green and the atmosphere remains pure and fragrant.
What to do and what not to do in Sawan?
Do:
Perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva daily
Chant Shiva Panchakshari Mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”
Offer Belpatra, milk, curd, honey etc.
Keep fast on Monday
Don’t:
Avoid meat, alcohol, tamasic food
Avoid lying, anger and harsh language
Don’t offer Tulsi leaves in Shiva Puja
